Fin del viaje / End of the trip

Un poco más de una semana más tarde, ya estamos todos de vuelta de nuestro viaje a Andalucía y casi recuperados. Hemos tenido una vez más mucha suerte con el tiempo, que ha sido soleado e incluso ha hecho mucho más calor del que esperábamos (en Sevilla y Córdoba hemos tenido temperaturas entre 30 y 39 grados). De nuevo ha sido un viaje muy activo, hemos hecho deporte en la playa y hemos caminado muchos kilómetros en total. Este año hemos hecho de nuevo la Sponsored Walk por la Victory School en Kenia durante el viaje cuando estábamos en Granada; hemos descendido desde el pueblo de Alfacar hasta Granada.
Para nosotros, los profesores de español que invertimos mucho tiempo y esfuerzo en preparar y realizar este viaje, ha sido de nuevo muy satisfactorio acompañar al grupo de 18 estudiantes de esta quinta edición de nuestro viaje a España. Ha sido un viaje muy especial porque hemos visitado cuatro ciudades en una semana y nos hemos alojado en tres albergues juveniles distintos. No ha sido siempre fácil seguir nuestro programa coordinando los horarios del transporte público con el ritmo del grupo y con momentos de mucho calor, por eso hemos apreciado mucho la cooperación y la actitud positiva de la mayoría de los alumnos. Ha sido una satisfacción ver cómo en cada ciudad han aprendido nuevos aspectos de la cultura y del estilo de vida españolas y cómo han practicado sus conocimientos de español. Quisiéramos destacar el éxito de la breve pero intensa visita al I.E.S. San Isidoro, en la que realizaron una entrevista en español y en inglés, visitaron varias instalaciones y observaron el recreo y una clase normal. Queremos agradecerles a todos los profesores que han hecho posible nuestra visita con su amable colaboración, en especial a los profesores de inglés y a la jefa de departamento, María José Navajas, Con excepción de varias heridas y ampollas por curar y el extravío de dos maletas en el viaje de vuelta, todos hemos vuelto sanos y salvos a casa.
Los alumnos van entregando el cuadernillo de actividades que han completado durante el viaje. Después de las vacaciones de otoño haremos un mural con una selección de fotos del viaje, que estará situado al lado de la puerta del salón de actos en la ISSE. Se publicará una extensa selección de fotos del viaje en la página web de la ISSE y pediremos a un pequeño grupo de alumnos que redacte un resumen del viaje para el ISSE Update. Los visitantes de nuestra biblioteca podrán leer los libros sobre Sevilla, Granada y Picasso, además de dos novelas ambientadas en la Andalucía árabe, que hemos adquirido durante el viaje. En unos meses, empezaremos los preparativos del viaje del próximo curso, cuyo destino todavía no hemos definido. ¿Iremos al norte de España o volveremos a uno de los destinos que ya hemos visitado para iniciar un nuevo ciclo de visitas?

One week and a few days later we are all back home from our trip to Andalucía and almost recovered from it. Once more we have been very lucky with the weather, which has been sunny, actually the temperature has been much higher than what we had expected on some days (in Sevilla and Córdoba it was between 30 and 39 degrees). It has been again a very active trip: we have sported on the beach and we have walked many kilometers in total. This year we have done again the the Sponsored Walk for the Victory School in Kenia during the trip when we were in Granada; we walked downhill from the village Alfacar to Granada.
For us, the Spanish teachers, that invest much time and effort to prepare and carry out this trip, it has been again very satisfactory to accompany the group of 18 students of the fifth edition of the trip to Spain. It has been a very special trip because we have visited four cities in one week and we have stayed in three different youth hostels. It has not always been easy to follow our programme coordinating the public transportation schedules with the rythm of the group at moments when it was really warm, that is why we have very much appreciated the cooperation and the positive attitude of most of the students. It has been very satisfactory to see how in each city they have learned about new aspects of the Spanish culture and way of life and how they have practice their command of Spanish. We would like to stress the success of the short but intense visit to the secondary school I.E.S. San Isidoro, where they carried out an interview in Spanish and English, visited several facilities and observed the break and a regular lesson. We would like to thank all the teachers that have made our visit possible with their kind collaboration, in particular the English teachers and the head of the department, María José Navajas. With the exception of cleaning a few wounds and blisters and the missing of two suitcases on the trip back to the Netherlands, we all have returned home safely.
The students are handing in the activities booklet that they have completed during the trip. After the autumn break, we will set up a display with a selection of photos next to the Aula door at the ISSE. A wide selection of photos will be published on the ISSE website and we will ask a small group of students to write a summary of the trip to be published on the ISSE Update. The visitors of our library will be able to read the books about Sevilla, Granada and Picasso, besides to two novels at Al-Ándalus, that we have purchased during the trip. In several months, we will start preparing next year's trip, the destination has not been established yet. Will we go to Northern Spain or will we return to one of the destinations that we have visited already in order to start a new cycle?

Día 8 / Day 8 17/10 - Málaga / Holanda

Nos levantamos a las siete y media para terminar de hacer la maleta. Bajamos el equipaje y desayunamos a las ocho y media. Después, cogimos dos autobuses para ir al aeropuerto de Málaga cargados con las maletas. Las facturamos y nos pusimos a la cola para pasar el control de seguridad. Cuando llegamos a la puerta de embarque, ya habían empezado a embarcar. Almorzamos en el avión y llegamos a Schiphol, donde hacía mucho más frío que en Andalucía, pero hacía sol. Dos maletas se habían quedado en Málaga, así que tuvimos que hacer la reclamación necesaria antes de tomar el tren. El viaje en tren tardó más de lo normal porque había obras y tuvimos que tomar un tren más lento. Finalmente, llegamos a Eindhoven a las seis y nos reunimos con nuestras familias para volver a casa.

We got up at half past seven to finish packing. We took our luggage downstaris and we had breakfast at half past eight. Then, we took two busses to go Málaga Airport, carrying our suitcases around. We checked in our luggage and we joined the queue to go through the security check. When we arrived to the gate, they had started boarding. We had lunch during the flight and we arrived to Schiphol, where it was much colder than in Andalucía, but it was also sunny. Two suitcases had stayed back in Málaga, so we had to go through the necessary procedures before we took the train. The trip by train took longer than usual because there were railway works and we had to take a slower train. We arrived to Eindhoven at six and we met our families to get back home.

Día 7 / Day 7 16/10 - Málaga

Nos levantamos a las ocho de la mañana. A las diez tomamos el autobús para ir al Museo Picasso. Después del museo, fuimos en autobús a un centro comercial que se llama Centro Larios para ir de compras durante un par de horas y también comimos allí. Luego, fuimos a La Malagueta, la playa de Málaga. Nadamos en el mar y jugamos al voleibol. La cena en el albergue estaba muy rica. Después de cenar, tuvimos una fiesta para celebrar el fin del viaje a España. Fue muy divertido, con música y baile. Fue un día muy divertido en Málaga.

We woke up at 8 a.m. At ten we got the bus to the Picasso Museum. After that, we wen to a shopping center called Centro Larios for a couple of hours and we had lunch there. Then we went to La Malagueta, Malaga's beach. We swam in the sea and we played volleyball. Dinner at the youth hostel was very good. After dinner, we had a party to celebrate the end of the trip to Spain. It was really fun, with music and dance. It was a very fun day in Málaga.

Día 6 / Day 6 15/10 - Granada/Málaga

Hoy hemos tenido que madrugar de nuevo. Hemos tenido que hacer nuestras maletas y estar abajo a las 8,30. Desayunamos pero no muy bien. Tuvimos que dejar nuestro equipaje en la sala de equipajes y salimos. El tiempo era frio. Tomamos el bus y se dirigió a la estación de autobuses. Cuando estábamos en la estación de autobuses, tomamos otro autobús a la montaña y allí comenzó nuestro "Sponsored Walk". Empezamos en una fuente y continuamos hacia abajo. Después de tres kilometros tuvimos un descanso y almorzamos. Nuestra comida no fue hecha rápidamente, por lo que pasó una hora antes de que pudiéramos iniciar nuestra caminata de nuevo. El tiempo se había hecho mas caluroso. Cuando finalmente terminó la "Sponsored Walk" y cuando todos estabámos cansados, tomamos un autobús y regresamos al albergue. Tomamos nuestras maletas y tomamos el autobús a la estación de autobuses. Desafortunadamente, ya no había asientos para todos en el próximo autobús así que tuvimos que tomar el siguiente autobús que salía dos horas más tarde (20.00). Como nuestro autobús fue más tarde, también llegamos más tarde en el albergue de Málaga, lo que significaba que tuvimos que cenar de picnic. La comida no era tan buena pero comimos algo en la estación de autobuses en Granada. Después de la cena fuimos a nuestras habitaciones y nos fuimos a la cama.

Today we had to wake up early again. We had to pack up our suitcases and be downstairs at 8.30.
We ate breakfast which could have been better. We had to leave our luggage in the baggage room
and went outside. The weather was quite cold. We took the bus and went to the bus station. When
we were at the bus station we took another bus up the mountain and there we began our Sponsored
Walk. We started at a fountain and walked down. After three kilometers we had a break and ate
lunch. Our food wasn´t quickly done and so it took another hour before we could start our walk again. At this time the weather got warmer. When we finally ended the school walk and when everyone was tired, we took a bus and went back to the hostel. We grabbed our luggage and took the bus to the bus station. Unfortunately, there were no seats for everybody in the next bus so we had to take the bus after that one which was two ours later (20.00). As our bus was later,
we also arrived later at the hostel in Malaga, which meant that we had to get picnic dinner.
The food wasn´t that good but we already ate something at the bus station in Granada. After wards we got to know our rooms and went to bed.

Día 5 / Day 5 14/10 - Granada

Hoy ha sido un día de calor. Desayunamos a las ocho y media y tomamos el autobus a las diez para ir a La Alhambra. La Alhambra es un palacio de los moros. Primero fuimos a los jardines que se llaman Generalife. hay muchas flores bonitas y la vista de Granada era increíble. despues fuimos a la fortaleza la Alcazaba. Después, fuimos al palacio y había muchas salas y patios que tambien eran bonitos y decorados con muchos detalles. Las decoraciones son flores y simbolos arabes. Los leones estaban siendo renovados lo que era una lástima porque es un monumento famoso. El almuerzo fue a la una y media. Despues fuimos a los baños árabes el Bañuelo en el barrio del Albaicín pero estaban cerrados. Caminamos por las calles de Alcaiceria. Son calles muy antiguas, bonitas y estrechas. En las calles hay muchas tiendas de recuerdos arabes. Primero caminamos alrededor de la catedral y despues los profesores fueron muy amables y nos dejaron ir 2 horas de compras, de seis a ocho. La mayoría de nosotros fuimos a la Alcaicería. Más tarde fuimos a cenar al hostal, donde coincidimos con el mismo grupo de estudiantes que también había estado en el albergue de Sevilla.

It was a warm day. We had breakfast at 8:30 and took the bus to Alhambra at about 10 in the morning. Alhambra is a palace of the Moors. First we went to the gardens called ´Generalife´which were really pretty, especially the flowers and the view of Granada. We went to the fortress which also had an awesome view. We went to another part of the palace which had all different kinds of rooms. They had beautiful decorations. There were Arabic signs, flowers and arches on the walls and the ceiling. They were renovating one of the rooms (patio) which was a shame because the lions were gone that represent something special. We had lunch at 1.30 in the afternoon. There were not many places to have lunch so we had to buy sandwiches from a bar. We were going to go to ´Baños Arabes´but it was closed. We walked around through the Alcaiceria which are some narrow streets with souvenir shops. There were Arabic souvenirs. First we walked around the cathedral and then we were allowed to have some free time. We had 2 hours of free time, from six to eight. Most of us went shopping in the Alcaiceria. After that we went back to the hostel and had our dinner. It was a coincidence because we met the same kids that were also in the hostel in Sevilla.

Día 4 / Day 4 13/10 - Sevilla/Granada

Nos levantamos a las siete y cuarto. Demasiado pronto...de nuevo.
Pusimos nuestras maletas y bolsas en la entrada y luego desayunamos lo más rápidamente posible. El pan era mejor hoy porque no era rancio. Yo (Rob) descubrí que los corn flakes tienen un sabor muy bueno. Tomamos tres autobuses para ir a la instituto de secundaria San Isidoro. Nos dividimos en dos grupos, los MP5 a DP2 y el resto. Los grupos visitaron una clase filosofía o una clase de ciencias y una clase de inglés. Durante el recreo, Gabriel y yo (Rob), jugamos al baloncesto, (Louis) flirteó con las chicas. Primero, nos sentamos e interactuamos con los estudiantes de en la clase de inglés, y fue muy divertido conocerles y practicar nuestro español con ellos, y su inglés con nosotros. Después del descanso, nos sentamos en una clase de filosofía, que fue muy interesante para nosotros. A mí (Luis) me gustó mucho y lo entendí, mientras yo (Rob), que no sabe mucho español, en realidad comprendí muchas de las palabras ¨dificiles¨ porque he descubierto que se basan en latin y son similares a las en inglés. Pero, yo (Rob) seguía perdido. Después de eso caminamos por Triana, un barrio típico de Sevilla, y luego tomamos un tren a Granada. Fue un viaje largo, pero muy divertido. Por fin llegamos a nuestro albergue por la noche y después de una cena rápida todos nos caímos redondos; todos, salvo algunas personas que estaban escuchando ruidos extraños en sus habitaciones. ¿Podría haber fantasmas?

We got up at quarter past seven , which was too early...again.
We put our bags at the entrance then and we ate breakfast as quickly as possible. The bread was better today because it wasn´t stale. I (Rob) found out that the corn flakes taste really good. We took three buses to go to the secondary school: San Isidoro. We split into two groups, the MP5´s to DP2´s and the rest. The groups visited a Philosophy or Science class and an English class. In between was a break, and Gabriel and me (Rob) played basketball while I (Louis) flirted with the ladies. We sat in and interacted with the students in English class first, and that was really fun getting to know them and practicing our Spanish on them, and their English on us. After the break we sat in on a Philosophy class, and that was very interesting for both of us. I (Louis) enjoyed it and understood it, while I (Rob), who doesn´t know a lot of Spanish, actually understood a lot of the ¨hard¨ words because I discovered they are based in Latin and are similar to those in English. But, I (Rob) was still lost. After that we walked around Triana, a famous neighbourhood of Sevilla, and then caught a train to Granada. It was a long ride, but a lot of fun. We finally got to our hostel late at night and after a quick dinner we all fell in our beds; all, except some people who were hearing strange noises in their rooms. Could there be ghosts?

Día 3 / Day 3 12/10 - Sevilla

Uau, hoy fue un dia especial. Tuvimos un dia muy divertido, y tambien aprendimos mucho sobre la cultura andaluza.
Primero, por la mañana cogimos el autobus para Isla Magica. Esta isla es un parque tematico que muestra mucho sobre el encuentro entre las culturas de España e Hispanomérica a partir del descubrimiento de América. Todas las atracciones tienen este tema, pero no dejan de ser muy muy muy divertidas. Fue una aventura para todos, especialmente para dos chicas ;) Michaela y Maria tuviron la experiencia de sus vidas (gracias a Robert). Fueron en atractaciones locas, con el mayor logro: el elevador de 140m! Claro que no fueron las unicas, y todos tuvieron aventuras proprias.
La diversion no termino aqui. Por la noche ¡fuimos a un espectaculo de flamenco! Fue una experiencia muy memorable para nosotros. No hay manera de describir el baile y la musica en simples palabras. Simplemente maravilloso.
Volvimos a casa en autobus cansados, pero muy contentos con nuestras experiencias nuevas.

Wow, today was a special day. We had a really fun day, and also learnt a lot about the Andalucian culture.
First of all, in the morning we took the bus to Isla Magica (Magic Island). This island is a theme park that shows a lot about the link between the Spanish and South American cultures due to the discovery of the Americas. Every ride had this theme, but do not lose their fun because of it. It was an adventure to everyone, especially for two of our girls ;) Michaela and Maria had the experience of their lives (thanks to Robert). They went on crazy rides, their biggest acomplishment being: the 140m elevator drop ride. Of course, they were not the only ones, and everyone had experiences of their own.
The fun didnt stop here. At night we went to see a Flamenco performance! It truly was a memorable experience for us. There is no way to describe the dance and the music in simple words. It was simply amazing.
We went back to the hostel by bus tired, but very happy with our new experiences.

Día 2 / Day 2 11/10 - Sevilla/Córdoba

Nos levantamos a las siete y media, demasiado pronto...
Tomamos el desayuno a las ocho, pero no estaba rico, porque el pan estaba reseso. Despues visitamos el centro de Sevilla, y fuimos a la catedral, la mas grande de Europa, y vimos su famosa torre, la Giralda. A las doce y media fuimos de Sevilla a Cordoba en tren. Cuando llegamos comimos en el ´Burger King´. Cuando terminamos visitamos tambien el centro antiguo, con la muy impresionante Mezquita . Visitamos un museo historico sobre Cordoba hace 1000 años. Despues, visitamos una casa-museo sobre judios sefarditas. Era muy interesante porque la guía era buena. Salimos de Cordoba en tren a Sevilla. Cenamos en el albergue y estaba muy rica especialmente las patatas. Nos relajamos durante el resto de la noche.

We got up at seven thirty, which was too early...
We ate breakfast at eight o'clock, but it wasn´t very tasty becasue the bread was stale. After, we visited the city centre of Sevilla and we went to Europe´s biggest cathedral, and saw its famous tower 'La Giralda'. At twelve thirty we went from Sevilla to Cordoba in the train. When we arrived we ate Burger King. As soon as we were finished we also visited the old centre, with the very imposing Mezquita. We visited a history museum about what Cordoba was like 1000 years ago. Afterwards, we visited a house that had been turned into a museum. It was about the Spanish Jews. It was interesting because we had a good guide. We left Cordoba to go back to Sevilla in the train. We ate dinner at the hostel which was very good especially the potatoes. We relaxed the rest of the night.

Día 1 / Day 1 10/10 - Holanda / Sevilla

Hoy llegamos en la estacion de tren de Eindhoven a las 8:30. Fuimos en tren al aeropuerto de Bruselas. Fue un viaje muy divertido, porque fue como una aventura (necesitamos cambiar de tren tres veces). Llegamos al aeropuerto de Sevilla a las 5:30, y hacia mucho calor. Solo Daniel y Gabriel llevaban pantalones cortos, por eso eran los unicos que no se morian de calor. Cuando llegamos al albergue estábamos todos muy cansados. Despues de la cena fuimos al Parque de Maria Luisa (el parque mas importante en Sevilla) y fuimos a la famosa Plaza de España. Despues nos fuimos a dormir a las 23:00. ¡Fue un dia muy DIVERTIDO!



We left Eindhoven station at 8:30, we got to Brussels by a train (we had to change the train three times). Everyone had a feeling that this is going to be a good trip. We flew to Sevilla airport and arrived there at 5:30. Our first feeling was the warmth. Only Daniel and Gabriel wore shorts. They were the only ones who survived the Spanish heat. When we got to the hostel, everyone was very tired. After a typical Spanish dinner, we went to the park María Luisa and the famous Plaza de España for a walk. We went to sleep at 23:00. That day was very FUN!

¡Andalucía, allá vamos! / Andalucía, there we go!

Dentro de una semana iniciamos el viaje a España de los estudiantes de español de ISSE (International Secondary School Eindhoven). En esta quinta edición, vamos a pasar una semana en varias ciudades en Andalucía, entre el sábado 10 de octubre y el sábado 17 de octubre:
- Sevilla - sábado 10 a martes 13 de octubre
- Córdoba - domingo 11 de octubre (viaje de 1 día)
- Granada - martes 13 a jueves 15 de octubre
- Málaga - jueves 15 a sábado 17 de octubre

Dieciocho alumnos de MP4 a DP2 serán supervisados por Mr Nogués y Ms Costas:
- María (nuestra veterana, ¡la primera alumna que ha participado en el viaje durante cuatro años!) y Michaela de DP2;
- Robert y Louis de DP1,
- Nick, Pippa, Daniel, Victor y Gabriel de MP5,
- Maddy, Irene, Maddie, Patricia, Brechtje, Anna, Jodie y Hye-in de MP4.

Realizaremos la Sponsored Walk durante el viaje, como nuestros compañeros del ISSE el día 15 de octubre, para recaudar dinero para la Victory School en Mombasa (Kenia), el proyecto de Comunidad y Servicio para toda la escuela.

Visitaremos un instituto de enseñanza secundaria en Sevilla, el I.E.S. San Isidoro (www.institutosanisidoro.com), el martes 13 de octubre.

El próximo miércoles, 7 de octubre, tendremos nuestra última reunión.
Nos reuniremos en la estación de trenes de Eindhoven a las 08:30 para salir en avión desde Bruselas. ¡Nos vemos allí!

Today we are starting the trip to Spain of the Spanish students at the ISSE (International Secondary School Eindhoven). In this fifth edition, we are going to spend a week in several cities in Andalucía, between Saturday 10th October and Saturday 17th October:
- Sevilla - Saturday 10th to Tuesday 13th October
- Córdoba - Sunday 11th October (one-day trip)
- Granada - Tuesday 13th to Thursday 15th October
- Málaga - Thursday 15th to Saturday 17th October

Eighteen MP4-DP2 students will be supervised by Mr Nogués and Ms Costas:
- María (our veteran, the first student that has joined the trip for four years!) and Michaela in DP2
- Robert and Louis in DP1
- Nick, Pippa, Daniel, Victor and Gabriel in MP5
- Maddy, Irene, Maddie, Patricia, Brechtje, Anna, Jodie and Hye-in in MP4

We will do the Sponsored Walk during the trip, like all ISSE student on 15th October, to raise funds for the Victory School in Mombasa (Kenya), the school-wide Community & Service project.

We will visit a secondary school in Sevilla, the I.E.S. San Isidoro (www.institutosanisidoro.com), on Tuesday 13th October.

Next Wednesday, 7th October, we will have our last meeting.

We will meet at Eindhoven Train Station at 08:30 to depart by plane from Brussels. See you there!
